Set up a device
Prerequisites
To complete the steps on this page, you must have completed the Get access page.
Required physical connections
When starting to set up the device, note that there are three important ports on the BattScan device as shown in the figure below.
-
Battery Interface Port (Front Panel)
-
120/220 VAC Power Port with Master Power Switch (Rear Panel)
-
Ethernet port (Rear Panel)
When making the connections, please follow these step-by-step instructions:
-
Ensure that the device’s master power switch on the rear panel is in the ‘OFF’ position (the
O
should be pressed, not the|
) -
Ensure that the device’s circular power button on the front panel is in the ‘OFF’ position (the button should be flush with the surrounding ring)
-
Connect one end of the 120/220 VAC power cable to a standard wall outlet
-
Connect the other end of the 120/220 VAC power cable to the device
-
Turn the master power switch to ‘ON’ (the
|
should be pressed, not theO
). At this point, the device’s internal power supply fans may start running and a humming sound may be heard. This is normal. -
If you are going to be connecting this device to the internet over ethernet, connect a CAT5+ ethernet cable to the back panel’s port now. If you plan on setting up WiFi connectivity, do not connect an ethernet cable.
Turning on the device
After making the required physical connections, turn on the device by pressing the power button on the front panel. Once you’ve done this, the button should illuminate green and the POWER LED on the front panel should light up as well.
When the device is booting up, the STATUS LED blinks. When that LED stops blinking and is lit continuously, that means the device is completely booted up and ready to be used.
For more information on device LED blinking, see LED indicators.
Connect to the Internet
The BattScan device must be connected to the Internet to operate. There are two ways to connect:
-
Connect an Ethernet cable
-
Configure a WiFi connection
The below diagram represents a typical networking setup for a BattScan device:
All user-device interaction happens through ReJoule’s BatteryDB servers. You can control a BattScan device from any network as long as it can connect to BatteryDB.
Connect an Ethernet cable
This is the simplest way to connect the device to internet. Simply follow these four steps:
-
Ensure the device is powered off (by making sure the front panel’s power button is not lit up green)
-
Connect a CAT5+ ethernet cable to the back panel’s port
-
Connect the same ethernet cable to a router which is connected to the internet and allows for dynamic allocation of IP addresses via DHCP.
-
Turn on the the device (by pressing the front panel’s power button so it lights up green)
Once the device’s STATUS LED stops blinking, it should be connected to the internet ready to run a test.
Note that the device should be assigned an IP address by the router, as it relies on Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). The device is not preset with and cannot be configured to use a static IP address at the time of writing this.
Configure a WiFi connection
BattScan WiFi connectivity can be configured with a web interface on your mobile device. Follow the screenshots shown below to set up WiFi.
Wait for the STATUS LED to stop blinking. Once it stops blinking, the device has successfully booted up and the WiFi Connect access point should be available.
On your mobile device, open your WiFi settings where you can see WiFi Connect from a list of available connections. If you do not see WiFi Connect access point, try restarting your phone’s WiFi, or refreshing the list of available connections.
Info
Note that the WiFi Connect access point connection will not show up in the following cases:
-
The device is already connected to the internet via Ethernet
-
The device was already configured with WiFi credentials for a given network
If you want to set up the WiFi connectivity, please make sure there is no Ethernet cable plugged in. Also, please note that this method of configuring device WiFi has not been developed or tested extensively and is meant to help you get started right away. If you need support for connecting the device to a more complex local area network, please contact us detailing your needs.
Click on WiFi Connect, and you might see a notification panel concerning “internet may not be available.” Simply select the Stay connected option.
Once connected to the access point, click on the Gear icon next to the connection to access its settings. Then click on Manage Router.
You will then see the following web portal interface. Then you can select the desired WiFi connection to connect the device to, input a password, and click Connect.
How often is Wi-Fi setup required?
You should only need to set up WiFi one time. Once it is set up, the device will remember the WiFi login credentials. There are a few cases in which you need to reconfigure the WiFi connection though. Those cases are:
-
The SSID or password of the WiFi connection changes
-
The device is moved to a different location where the previous connection is not available
Any time the device is able to connect to the network, the WiFi Connect access point will not show up. It only shows up when the device fails to connect to the Internet.
Register the device with BatteryDB
Once your device is set up and connected to the internet, you need to register it to your BatteryDB organization in order to use it to test any batteries.
To see whether the device is provisioned correctly, please follow the Create, Edit, and View Your Devices guide. If the device already has an API key (as described in that guide), you’re all done!
If there is no API key yet please contact us by opening a support ticket or emailing [email protected] for help.
Please make sure the device is on and connected to the internet for at least 30 minutes before opening a support ticket or emailing for help. Once the support ticket or email is received, a ReJoule support officer will be able to see if the device was successfully connected to the internet and will proceed with registering it to your organization.
